BP(Southern Africa)HeadOfficesCapeTown

The corporate head office for BP (Southern Africa) was completed in 2005 after the architects won a design competition two years earlier. A resource and energy efficiency design brief (developed by Arup) followed the competition. Deep recessed façades prevent solar gain, while light shelves reflect light into the deep floor plates. The offices are arranged along a triple height public circulation zone where the cafés, a gymnasium, a medical suite, a travel agent and meeting rooms are located. Environmental performance is largely achieved through the external envelope. Chimney stacks, balconies and light shelves protect the façades. The roof scape is developed as a fifth elevation: thermal solar-

with photovoltaic panels and large pyramidal roof lanterns -double up as solar chimneys and light source for the atrium trees to grow. The project received numerous awards for sustainable design.
